The Swan chair was designed in 1956 by critically acclaimed Danish architect Arne Jacobsen. The chair was originally made for the lobby area of the new Royal Hotel building in Copenhagen which Jacobsen had been commissioned to design. Very quickly the chair was very popular and has remained so ever since – largely due to its timeless balanced design and practicality. The chair is constructed from a moulded fibreglass frame with padded cushioning covered in a classic red wool mix fabric – just as the original. Arne Jacobsen is widely recognised as having been one of the most important and influential Danish designer and architects of the Twentieth Century. Arne Jacobsen was born in 1902 in Copenhagen. He was a fairly unremarkable student at school and once his studies were finished he became bricklayer’s apprentice.
